• As Columns – the
button on the far right.
With this view you see
a hierarchical view of
your computer. The
right pane splits into
multiple columns to
display your computer’s
file and folder
organization.
The Dock
The Dock is your personal launching pad to open applications, documents,
servers, websites, to take out the trash, and more. The Dock appears at the
bottom of your screen by default.
• The Dock has two sides. There is a gray dividing line.
o Everything to the left is an application. Everything else (files,
documents, folders, disks, trash, etc.) is to the right.
• If a program is open it has triangle displayed below its icon.
• To open a program from the Dock, simply click the icon one time.
• To add an icon to the Dock, use the Finder to locate the application,
folder or file, then click and drag it to the Dock. Drag applications to the
left of the line and folders and files to the right of the line.
o Note – when you drag a file to the Dock you haven’t moved the
original file, you are just setting up a
pointer (or alias).
o Tip – you can also press Control and click
the icon of an application that is running
and select Keep in Dock.
• To remove an icon from the Dock, click and drag it out of the Dock. It will
disappear in a puff of smoke.
o Note – when you remove an icon from the Dock, it does not
remove the application, folder or file from your computer.
